Connection of WiFi/LTE access points to PSW switches

9th of June 2021

If you need to connect an access point to TFortis PSW switch for remote access to cameras via a wireless communication channel, you can use several methods depending on the equipment used:

  • Use of IEEE802.3af cameras and a switch without UPS
  • Use of IEEE802.3af cameras and a switch with UPS
  • Use of IEEE802.3at cameras and a switch without UPS
  • Use of IEEE802.3at cameras and a switch with UPS
  1. Use of IEEE802.3af cameras and a switch without UPS

If your system uses IEEE802.3af cameras and you need to connect an additional access point to the switch, the optimal solution will be the use of TFortis PSW-1-45-WiFi switch.

TFortis PSW-1-45-WiFi is an outdoor unmanaged switch which has four PoE ports compliant with IEEE802.3af standard and the fifth Passive PoE port 24 V (pairs 4, 5 and 7, 8) – 24 V, 12 W.

The access point supporting Passive PoE 24 V power supply can be connected directly to the fifth port of the switch (Figure 1).

  1. Use of IEEE802.3af cameras and a switch with UPS

If your system uses IEEE802.3af cameras and you need to connect an additional access point to the switch and provide backup power supply to the entire system, the optimal solution will be the use of TFortis PSW-1G4F-UPS, PSW-2G4F-UPS or PSW-2G2F+UPS switches together with a PoE converter.

The PoE converter is designed to convert 48 V voltage of PoE IEEE802.3af standard into Passive PoE 24 V required for the access point connection. The connection scheme is shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2. Connection of access point to TFortis PSW-2G4F-UPS using PoE converter

Note that to energize the access point, you need to connect the converter to the PoE port of the switch. When the converter is connected to the PoE port of the switch, the number of cameras you can connect to the switch is reduced.

Also note that power consumption of the PoE converter is added to power consumption of the connected cameras and must not exceed the PoE budget of the switch.

  1. Use of IEEE802.3at cameras and a switch without UPS

If your system uses IEEE802.3at cameras and you need to connect an additional access point to the switch, the optimal solution will be the use of TFortis PSW-2G+, PSW-2G6F+ or PSW-2G8F+ switches together with a power supply unit for access points.

As a rule, access points are supplied with an injector energized from 230 V power supply and have an output voltage required to connect this access point. The connection scheme is shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3. Connection of access point to TFortis PSW-2G8F+ using PoE injector

Note that to ensure communication of the access point with the switch, it is necessary to connect the power supply unit of the access point to the RJ 45 port of the switch. When the power supply unit is connected to the PoE port of the switch, the number of cameras you can connect to the switch is reduced.

  1. Use of IEEE802.3at cameras and a switch with UPS

If your system uses IEEE802.3at cameras and you need to connect an additional access point to the switch and provide backup power supply to the entire system, the optimal solution will be the use of TFortis PSW-2G+UPS-Box, PSW-2G6F+UPS-Box or PSW-2G8F+UPS-Box switches together with PoE converter.

The PoE converter is designed to convert 48 V voltage of PoE IEEE802.3af standard into Passive PoE 24 V required for the access point connection. The connection scheme is shown in Figure 4.
